Cabernet Sauvignon

The Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon is a tribute to winemaker John Daniel Jr., who produced the much-heralded Inglenook 1941 Cabernet Sauvignon from vine cuttings brought to the property from Bordeaux by original founder Gustave Niebaum.

By all accounts, 2011 was a difficult vintage. Not only was the growing season uncharacteristically cold, two heavy storms at critical times affected the harvest. The first rainy cold snap in early June, resulted in limited fruit set in certain vineyard blocks, which reduced our overall yield. The second storm, at the beginning of October, triggered a botrytis outbreak in several of the vineyards. Although the affected clusters were quickly removed, this further diminished our fruit yield for the season. The upside to having a smaller crop, however, is that the grapes develop a more intense fragrance and concentration.

Tasting Notes

Subtle and round on the palate, the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon Cask offers fragrant notes of boysenberries, cherries, black currant and leather. Flavor intensity increases on the mid-palate with beautiful impressions of red fruits, spices, and coffee. This vintage bestows a supple texture with soft tannins and smooth, even transitions, giving it a particularly elegant style.

2012 was one of the best vintages in recent history because of near perfect climate conditions. The entire season was marked by moderate temperatures, which lasted through September and October. Having no heat spikes or rain to contend with in the fall allowed the fruit to hang on the vines longer, giving the grapes better concentration and ripeness as well as more textural dimension and flavor complexity.

Tasting Notes

On the nose, black cherries, strawberries, and raspberries create a rich perfume that’s enlivened by notes of violets and baking spices. There’s an exceptional balance of ripeness, not overdone or underdone, enhanced by moderate acidity, even development on the palate, and impressions of blueberry cream and black raspberries. This wine is meaty. Supple, long-lasting tannins frame richly textured flavors that linger on the finish.

2013, a stellar vintage, with the lack of precipitation it created one of the driest growing seasons on record enabling vine optimization by the ideal conditions of the previous year. The growing season produced a large crop, requiring a thinning out of fruit on multiple occasions, but these efforts paid off. By late summer, it was apparent our Cabernet was going to be of very high quality. The resulting fruit exhibited tremendous concentration that was perfectly balanced and highly fragrant.

Tasting Notes

Our 2013 Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon is a voluminous wine with upfront sweetness and fine, powdery tannins that develop intensity. Highly aromatic and immediately expressive, the palate reflects the nose with fragrant nuances of red and black fruits that include raspberries, cherries, blueberries, plums and blackberries, all enlivened by exotic spices, notes of tobacco, and a touch of dark chocolate. This is a big wine, one that demonstrates great texture, a freshness brought about by balanced natural acidity, and a long, rapturous finish. It will continue to evolve over the next 10-20 years.

2014 was the second year of a significant drought in Napa Valley. Budbreak was early and temperatures were consistently warm throughout the growing season. This led to an early harvest of impressively concentrated fruit at excellent phenolic maturity. The result is a wine with fine, well-integrated tannins, ensuring enjoyment either in its youth or after decades of cellaring.

Tasting Notes

The 2014 vintage of Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon reflects a very pure composition that contains only small amounts of Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and just a touch of Merlot. From this outstanding year emerges a smooth, generous palate with very fine dusty tannins and exemplary balance. As weighty and voluptuous as its predecessor, the flavors and fragrance of this vintage lean more heavily toward black fruits and seasoned wood. Cassis, blackberries, plums, and black currants provide juicy, mouth-filling flavors while distinct notes of cigar box, oak, graphite, and earthy spices create aromatic accents that are bound to evolve and become even more intense with bottle age. Yet, impressive density and texture already create ample allure.

Following a relatively warm winter, the 2015 growing season at Inglenook began early, staying 14 to 21 days ahead of average from budbreak to harvest. Variable weather during flowering in May, and limited precipitation for the fourth consecutive year, led to relatively low yields. Merlot, the first Bordeaux varietal to reach maturity, was picked on August 22nd, followed nine days later by the first lot of Cabernet Sauvignon. The dry, warm weather during September resulted in optimal conditions for fruit ripening. Harvest was completed by September 24th. Modest vineyard yields resulted in wines that capture Inglenook’s signature elegance, while remaining round and generous on the palate.

Tasting Notes

A classic expression of Inglenook’s terroir, the 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon opens with a complex aromatic burst of cassis, black cherry, vanilla and anise. Supple, ripe tannins enhance a velvety palate, which boasts tremendous depth. Even more striking is the extravagant array of macerated black fruits which extends through the lingering finish.

After four years of drought, a winter with average rainfall was welcome, as it provided ample soil moisture for a strong start to the 2016 growing season. Average late-spring temperatures and limited precipitation minimized the risk of frost during mid-May bloom, ensuring average yields. June closed with a heat spell, slowing vine canopy growth at the ideal time. All fruit for the 2016 Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon blend was harvested under ideal conditions from September 6th through October 10th.

Tasting Notes

On the nose, the 2016 Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon opens with very focused fresh, ripe black cherry and blackberry aromas. In the background, scents of garrigue – lavender, thyme, and bay – emerge and build complexity. On the palate, the wine is superbly balanced to the point that it is difficult to identify individual flavor components, although cassis bud and blackberry do reveal themselves. The fine-grained, polished tannins are very much in harmony with the oak and exhibit an underlying firmness that continues throughout the long, lingering aromatic finish.

Rainfall in winter and spring of 2017 was bountiful, totaling nearly 50 inches. These conditions allowed for a smooth transition into bloom and fruit set. All of the organically-farmed fruit on the Inglenook estate that comprise our 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon was harvested from September 5th to October 6th. The fruit shows balanced acidity across the board, lending freshness to the final blend – a hallmark of Inglenook wines.

Tasting Notes

Ruby in color, with a violet-edged hue, the 2017 Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon shows notes of blackberry brambles, black cherry, truffle, fennel and cocoa. The structure is tightly woven, with fine, round, velvety tannins; hints of vanilla and licorice arise during the long, generous finish. Superb balance and freshness ensure that this wine will continue to evolve in the bottle for years to come.

Well-timed spring rainfall and moderate temperatures throughout the season set the stage for a generous 2018 crop of excellent quality. Blocks contributing to our 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon represent the true diversity of the Inglenook estate. We picked the first Merlot from the Gio vineyard on September 13, and the earliest Cabernet Sauvignon from the Cohn blocks on September 21. Fruit from Lower Cask and Walnut in the Pritchett Hill vineyard, in the heart of the Rutherford Bench arrived next, while Cabernet from the Chateau blocks ripened fully by the first week of October.

Tasting Notes

A wine of considerable charm, energy and finesse, 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon is opaque ruby red in color, and opens with aromas of ripe cassis, blackberry, espresso and cedar. Although powerful below the surface, the wine is extremely focused and well-balanced, with silky tannins, ample freshness, and vibrant structure, that lead to a crescendo in the lengthy, polished finish.

A wet winter just before the 2019 growing season fed our vineyards and a cool spring gave way to budbreak in the second week of April. That led to excellent conditions for an early bloom which occurred just after more rain in late May. The resulting 2019 crop was generously proportioned, and while July was cool, warmer temperatures in August and September promoted very gradual, even ripening. A diverse selection of blocks from nine discrete vineyard areas on the estate contributed to our 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon. Due to excellent weather during harvest, we were able to pick blocks sequentially, at optimal ripeness, beginning September 20th (Gate Cabernet Franc) and finishing on October 17th (Red Barn Cabernet Sauvignon)

Tasting Notes

Stunningly deep ruby in color, the 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon opens with heady aromas of brambly black cherry, vanilla, warm brioche, and crème de cassis. As the wine warms on the palate, notes of red cherry, graphite and fennel emerge, as very polished, refined tannins carry the wine into a long, fragrant finish. Layered flavors, good tension, and a perfect integration of wine and oak interact to create this classic expression of Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon.

Excellent canopy growth protected the fruit during the short stints of summer heat that led to 2020’s early veraison. Harvest for this wine was fairly compressed, beginning with the Boardwalk Merlot block on September 7th, and concluding with Red Barn Clone 337 on September 28th. Practicing organic farming since the 1980’s, Inglenook was one of the first Napa Valley vineyards to be certified organic in 1994. Experimentation is embedded in Inglenook’s DNA, and within this ongoing evaluation, considerations of climate change, vine age, vintage and other factors reiterate that an estate of Inglenook’s caliber and quality is forever a work-in-progress.

Tasting Notes

The 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon is striking in appearance, with its garnet color and youthful purple edge. The wine reveals vibrant expressions of crushed cherry, cedar, and red currant, as well as suggestions of forest floor and bay leaf. On the palate, the wine is medium bodied, exhibiting both considerable energy and elegance. Every glass of Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon recalls the more than 140 years of Cabernet Sauvignon creation at Inglenook, taking you through the Chateau and its rich winemaking history that continues today.

Welcome rain fell in January and March, nourishing Inglenook’s soil for a healthy bud break. Warmer May temperatures advanced bloom, leading to exceptional Summer growing conditions. Small canopies aided slow and steady sugar accumulation, resulting in a modest yield of exquisite quality. All fruit was hand-harvested between September 1st and October 5th. Practicing organic farming since the 1980’s, Inglenook is one of the first Napa Valley vineyards to be certified organic in 1994. Tasting Notes
