Sauvignon Blanc

While the Inglenook Estate is perhaps best known for Cabernet Sauvignon, the lower portion of our Chateau vineyard, known as Tank House, has proven to be an exceptional site for growing white grape varieties.

The sandy-clay loam soils in this area of the Estate have good water-holding capacity and underlying gravel for drainage, features that are critical for the development of both Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

In 2011 the Inglenook winemaking team explored the idea of creating a Sauvignon Blanc–-French for “wild white”––by grafting clones of that varietal onto a selection of our Petite Sirah vines and were delighted to discover a citrusy white wine exhibiting floral qualities.

The 2013 vintage marked the debut of Inglenook’s Sauvignon Blanc with a notable bouquet and a crisp palate, perfectly suited for summer meals.

Winter and spring rainfall was bountiful, totaling nearly 50 inches. The flowering of Sauvignon Blanc at Inglenook was rapid, if slightly late, with full bloom occurring at the end of May. High mid-June temperatures put ripening back on track. Final ripening was uniform, and harvest was rapid, taking place between August 17th and August 30th.

Tasting Notes

With a pale gold hue, the 2017 Inglenook Sauvignon Blanc opens with fresh, subtle notes of lemon-lime zest, white peach, lemongrass, and citrus blossoms. A light touch of French oak adds structure and complexity to this surprisingly full-bodied, vibrant wine, which exhibits distinct minerality on the palate. The finish is highly aromatic with lingering freshness and a return of the citrus and white peach notes present on the nose.

Vintage Notes

The 2018 vintage will be remembered as one with a generous crop of excellent quality. Well-timed precipitation in March and April ensured an ideal start to the growing season. Budbreak was late, helping to avoid frost damage, and initial shoot growth was slow but very steady. Bloom occurred in late May, with no water stress and moderately warm temperatures, leading to a desirable fruit set for all Sauvignon Blanc blocks. All fruit was harvested from August 24th through September 3rd.

Tasting Notes

The 2018 Inglenook Sauvignon Blanc displays intense, fresh aromas of gooseberry, honeysuckle, and lemon zest. Adding further complexity on the palate are flavors of white peach and pear, which are brought into focus by the balanced acidity. There is a distinct energy and a varietal dynamic that are anchored by the minerality and finely delineated mouthfeel of this classic expression of Sauvignon Blanc.

Leading into the 2019 growing season, winter rains were heavier than average and continued into the early spring. The resulting ambient moisture paved the way for a well-timed bloom. A warm summer, followed by moderate weather conditions from August through the beginning of September, provided excellent conditions for the ripening and harvest of our Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon.

Tasting Notes

The 2019 Sauvignon Blanc displays a stunning array of bright aromas including lemongrass, white peach, and Asian pear. This fresh, captivating wine was aged sur lies, giving it a rich texture. An intriguing flinty minerality emerges in the finish.

Vintage Notes

Inglenook has long embraced organic farming, and we were among the first in Napa Valley wineries to have our vineyards certified more than 20 years ago. Our farming practices, combined with low temperatures during the winter before the 2020 growing season, made desirable soil nutrients for early spring growth available to our Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon vines. In turn, the leaf canopies developed early, and provided ample protection from a heat spike we experienced just prior to harvest. We harvested all the fruit for our 2020 Sauvignon Blanc under optimal conditions over a week-long period, finishing on August 19th.

Tasting Notes

Opening with fresh, well defined notes of lemon zest and honeydew, the 2020 Sauvignon Blanc shows exemplary varietal character. The rich, creamy mid-palate leads to a lingering finish highlighted by lemon-lime essences, minerality, and a touch of white peach.

Vintage Notes

The 2021 vintage began with January and February rains, providing ample soil moisture in time to ensure a healthy bud break. Throughout the rest of the season, excellent conditions created gradual ripening of our white grapes. We hand-harvested all Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon over a single week, beginning August 13th. Practicing organic farming since the 1980’s, Inglenook was one of the first Napa Valley vineyards to be certified organic in 1994. Experimentation is embedded in Inglenook’s DNA, and within this ongoing evaluation, considerations of climate change, vine age, vintage and other factors reiterate that an estate of Inglenook’s caliber and quality is forever a work-in-progress.

Tasting Notes

Pale gold in color, the wine shows youthful exuberance, suggesting freshly harvested Sauvignon Blanc fruit. Floral notes, ranging from Meyer lemon blossom to honeysuckle, provide lift to the fruity aromas of grapefruit, lemongrass, and gooseberry. The palate is lively, with solid acidity and a creaminess originating from the interplay of sur lies treatment and completely integrated French oak. The 2021 Sauvignon Blanc will continue to age nicely in bottle for at least several more years.
